The phone will detect these NFC tags and perform some customizable action - e.g.

Barens & Noble is looking to undercut the price of the Amazon Kindle Fire with the introduction of a Nook Tablet model with half the internal storage as the version currently available. According to The Verge, an 8GB Nook Tablet is headed to store shelves this Wednesday, February 22nd. A leaked document from Walmart says the new device will go on sale just as the clock strikes midnight and suggests that units are already arriving in stores. Apple asks EU regulators to step in on Motorola patent dispute

Apple already asked the European Telecommunications Standards Institute for more transparency on FRAND licensing, and now it's seeking a full-blown intervention. Motorola Mobility claims it received a letter on Friday from the European Commission advising there has been a complaint against it from Apple. The letter also stated that Cupertino wants the Commission to enforce the firm's standards-essential patents that breach agreed FRAND commitments.

Poll: Thinner device or removable battery?

Poll: Thinner device or removable battery?

. Ideally, manufacturers should release products with features that customers want. But some specs may be a bit impossible to feature together. There seems to be a new trend in the market – non-removable batteries. This allows manufacturers to pack things together and make devices much thinner. But is that really what we want?

Having a removable battery brings many improvements to the user experience. Batteries lose efficiency, for one, and one is usually able to just hit a carrier store and pop in the new battery when this happens.

Fiat heir Lapo Elkann takes Wallpaper magazine into his garage

Fiat heir Lapo Elkann takes Wallpaper magazine into his garage

There's a part of us that wishes the automotive industry were packed with more eccentric characters like Lapo Elkann. The rakish heir to the Fiat empire (and possible future president of Ferrari) is anything but dull, overdosing on coke and heroin in a transsexual prostitute's apartment one minute and changing the outcome of an NBA basketball game the next. As much a fashion icon as an industrial tycoon, Lapo is the darling of published arbiters of style like Intersection and Wallpaper magazines, the latter of which got a behind-the-scenes look at Lapo's favorite cars for a photo shoot.

Intel releases Core i7-3820 CPU, proves Sandy Bridge E isn't entirely elitist

Intel releases Core i7-3820 CPU, proves Sandy Bridge E isn't entirely elitist

The cost of entry to the LGA-2011 party just tumbled by around $250 thanks to Chipzilla's Core i7-3820 processor. It's a proper Sandy Bridge E processor with PCIe 3.0 support and more PCIe lanes, more memory bandwidth and room for more RAM compared to older platforms, but of course it's also lower specced than the pricey 3960X and 3930K. It ‘only' has four cores (and eight threads), 10MB of L3 cache and it isn't fully unlocked — as denoted by the lack of a K or an X in its title.

Three Samsung phones show up with WiFi certification

Three Samsung phones show up with WiFi certification

Samsung may not be holding any press conferences at the Mobile World Congress this year, but that doesn't it won't have anything to show at the event. According to recent sightings on the WiFi certification website, Samsung might have three phones to unveil to the public. The three devices that have been recently spotted with WiFi certification are the SGH-T999, SGH-I535, and the SPH-L710. Since Samsung won't be announcing the Galaxy S3 at MWC, it's safe to say that we can rule it out from the trio.
